How to Avoid Hitting a Deer on the Road

How to Avoid Hitting a Deer on the Road

BAY CITY, Mich. - We've all been there, or know someone who has; you're driving along on a winding country road when all of a sudden a flash of brown crosses your path — you've hit a deer. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), large animal collisions have accounted for an average 187 fatalities in recent years. With deer season just around the corner, more and more drivers need to stay alert and aware when driving, especially during dawn and dusk. Here are some simple tips on how to avoid hitting a deer on the road this fall!

Preventive Techniques
  • The two most important ways to avoid a potential dear collision are slow down and then SLOW DOWN. If you're traveling through an area known for its high deer population, slow down and follow the posted speed limit.
  • Always wear a seatbelt. The most significant and severe injuries in deer-vehicle accidents usually result from failure to use a seat belt.
  • Engage your high-beams or bright-lights whenever the road is free of oncoming traffic at night. This will increase your visibility and give you more time to react.
  • Keep a look out for eye shine along the roadside, and immediately slow your vehicle down.
Deer Statistics
  • Deer breeding season usually runs from October through early January. This is the time when deer are heavily active and on the move. This is also when deer-vehicle collisions are at their peak.
  • Even though deer may wander in and out of residential neighborhoods, they are most commonly found on the outskirts of town and in heavily wooded areas.
  • Deer are natural pack animal and are rarely found alone, thus, if you see one deer you can bet there is a another close by.
Encountering a Deer
  • Never, EVER, swerve to avoid hitting a deer in the road. Stay the defensive driver and avoid veering into the opposite lane to avoid a collision. Swerving can lead to a collision with an oncoming vehicle, take you off the roadway and into a tree or ditch, and greatly increase your chance of severe injuries.
  • Deer are very unpredictable, even one who is calmly standing on the side of the road could jump in front of your vehicle for no reason. If you do see a deer, slow down and maintain control to allow the deer to cross the road or until you have successfully passed the deer completely.
  • If unfortunately you do collide with a deer (or any other large animal) call emergency services immediately if injuries are involved, or local police if no one is injured, but damage has been caused to your or someone else's property.
If there is only one thing you take away from these tips on how to avoid hitting a deer on the road, let it be this: don't veer for deer. Also, remember to not approach the deer if you do indeed hit it because it could still be alive and your presence may startle it more.

We hope you don't have any deer-vehicle collisions this fall, however, if you do, our Caro area certified service center will get your vehicle back on the road in no time at all!

Different Ways To Buy A Car: Leasing, Buying New And Buying Used

Different Ways To Buy A Car: Leasing, Buying New And Buying Used

BAY CITY, Mich. - When it comes to getting a new vehicle it comes down to three different ways to buy a car: leasing, buying new and buying used. What are the pros and cons of each? What works best for you? For your family? It's always difficult for car sellers to give distinct answers, because car buying is in itself a process that all factors on the buyer. It is different for everyone, and everyone has a different idea for what they want in their perfect vehicle.

Let's break it down:
  • Leasing: Leasing a new vehicle enables buyers to get into a brand new car for a much cheaper price, however when the lease ends you are essentially left with nothing (except a higher credit score if you made your payments on time). You are really just renting a new vehicle every 2-3 years, and there are definitely pros and cons. When leasing, you are able to get into a brand new car that you might not have been able to purchase on your own and you get a new car every two to three years. In this aspect you will be kept up to date with the newly available safety, entertainment and driving features that cars have each year. However, in the end you have to give the car back, leaving no ROI.
  • Buying New: This is indeed the most expensive option, however, it is also the longest term. A new vehicle is often under warranty for several years following purchase, and sometimes you can end up driving the car for over a decade.
  • Buying Used: Purchasing a used vehicle is the cheapest option, however, it will not be a new car. An older car means older technology, older safety features and older car parts underneath the hood. Used cars usually require more maintenance as well. However, by letting "someone else take the hit" (previous owner) in regards to depreciating value, you could save money, and pay less in insurance as well.
These are the different ways to buys a car: leasing, buying new and buying used. So, what should you do? You have to ask yourself, "Does the car provide any extra value beyond transporting me from point A to point B?" The answer will depend heavily on what you chose to do in terms of your career, family, income and the amount of time you will spend using your car. For example, if you expect to drive a vehicle for 10 years and then pass it off to your children, then a new car may work. If you are a recent college grad that isn't ready to take the dive and purchase a car, a lease might work better until you get settled.

If you are looking to inquire more about vehicle purchasing and leasing options, feel free to contact one of our sales consultants and get more information. All of our consultants are friendly and knowledgeable, and will help you choose the best option for you at your local Bridgeport Area Used Car DealerHank Graff Chevy is located at 3636 Wilder Road, Bay City, MI 48706 and we can help you find the perfect vehicle for your weekend getaway! For more information on Hank Graff Chevrolet, or for any questions call us at (989) 684-4411 or visit our website: www.GraffBayCity.com.

How To Find The Right Car Seat

How To Find The Right Car Seat

BAY CITY, Mich. - Every parent has (hopefully) gone through the process of researching and purchasing a car seat for their child. It is one of the most important, but also frustrating, choices in the early stages of becoming a parent. There are several types of seats to choose from, from infant to convertible and booster, depending on your child's age and size. Even if you've already found "the one", it is extremely important to know how to install the car seat correctly and also when to transition your child to another type of seat as your child grows bigger. So, we at Graff Bay City, are going to fill you in on how to find the right car seat.

First, there are four types of car seats that are created for different age groups. The best car seat for your young child to use is the rear facing car seat. It has a harness and is able to cradle and move with your child in the event of a crash.

  • Types of Rear-Facing Car Seats
    • Infant Car Seat: This is a rear-facing seat only and is designed for newborns and small babies (like the one pictured above). Babies usually out-grow these seats by eight-to-nine months. When that happens, Safercar.gov recommends switching to a convertible or all-in-one car seat and use it facing the rear.
    • Convertible Seat: As the child grows, this seat can switch from a rear-facing seat to a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether. Since it can be used with children of various sizes, it allows for most children to stay in the rear-facing position for a longer amount of time.
    • All-in-One Seat: This seat can also allow children to stay in the rear-facing position longer and can change from a rear-facing seat to a forward-facing seat and to a booster seat as the child grows.
The second type is a forward-facing car seat that limits your child's forward movement during a crash.
  • Types of Forward-Facing Seats
    • Convertible Seat: As the child grows, this specific seat can change from a rear-facing seat to a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether.
    • Combination Seat: As a child grows, this seat transitions from a forward-facing seat into a booster seat.
    • All-in-One Seat: This seat can change from a rear-facing seat, to a forward facing seat, to a booster seat as the child grows bigger.
The third type is a booster seat which positions the seat-belt so that it fits properly over the stronger part of your child's body.
  • Types of Booster Seats
    • Booster Seat with High Back: This type of booster seat is designed to boost that child's height so the seat belt fits properly. It also provides head and neck support and is ideal for vehicles that don't have head rests or high back seats.
    • Backless Booster Seat: A backless booster seat is completely designed to boost the child's height so the seat belt fits properly but does not provide head or neck support. It is made for vehicles that have headrests.
The fourth type is made for children that have outgrown the weight and age requirement for car-seats and booster-seats and that is the seatbelt. The belt should lay across the upper thighs and be snug across the shoulder and chest to restrain your child safely in a crash. It should never rest on the stomach area or across the neck.

Whoa, just typing all of that made us pretty concerned about child safety but also a bit confused about which seat would be best for our children. Thankfully, Parents Central came up with a nifty system that will help you on how to find the right car seat. Check it out here. It all depends on your child's age and size as well as the type of vehicle you drive. Once you figure out the best car seat option, you can start shopping, and be confident in your choices!

When choosing a vehicle for your family, safety is definitely the number one concern in most cases. Thanks to Chevy's diligence to offering the best safety features available, we have some exciting family cars coming from Chevrolet in the next few months, including the all-new Malibu! If you would like to take a test drive in any of our family-friendly vehicles, stop by your local St. Charles Area Chevy Dealer todayHank Graff Chevy is located at 3636 Wilder Road, Bay City, MI 48706 and we can help you find the perfect vehicle for your weekend getaway! For more information on Hank Graff Chevrolet, or for any questions call us at (989) 684-4411 or visit our website: www.GraffBayCity.com.

Chevy Brings The 2016 Camaro Home To Lansing

Chevy Brings The 2016 Camaro Home To Lansing

BAY CITY, Mich. - Michigan's capital city has a new resident as Chevy brings the 2016 Camaro home to Lansing. General Motors announced that the 2016 muscle car will be built in Lansing, and will bring 500 jobs and over $170 million dollars to the area. The fifth-generation Camaro is currently being built at a General Motors Plant in Ontario, but the all-new sixth-generation Camaro will be built in Michigan's capital city starting in November.

GM will invest $175 million dollars into the facility that will build the new Camaro to cover new equipment as well as new paint systems, including those for Camaro-only colors: Summit White, Bright Yellow and Red Hot. Currently, the Lansing plant also builds the Cadillac ATS and CTS models. The Mayor of Lansing said that the announcement makes him feel like the "luckiest mayor in America".

The Detroit-based automaker is investing over $2.5 billion dollars into upgrades for facilities around the U.S, which will take about 3 years to finish. Here in Michigan those plans include a $124 million dollar investment to the Pontiac Metal Center, $520 million dollars going for tooling and equipment at the Lansing Delta Township plant, and over $130 million towards a brand new body shop and stamping facility upgrades at Pre-Production Operations in Warren, Mich.

Chevy brings the 2016 Camaro home to Lansing after its summer cross-country promotional tour ends at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall. The all-new sixth-generation Camaro was revealed in Detroit last month, and since then has been going toe-to-toe against the 50th Anniversary Edition Mustang and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat. The 2016 Camaro will go on sale in the fourth quarter in 2015, and you can bet that Hank Graff Chevrolet will have the best inventory around! If you would like to test drive any of our current Camaro inventory, stop by or give us a call! Hank Graff Chevy is located at 3636 Wilder Road, Bay City, MI 48706 and we are here to help our community grow to become an even better place to call home! For more information on Hank Graff Chevrolet, or for any questions call us at (989) 684-4411 or visit our website: www.GraffBayCity.com.

The ’16 Cruze Will Be Unveiled In Detroit On June 24th

BAY CITY, Mich. – After years of waiting its turn to return to the compact-car segment, Chevrolet FINALLY broke through with the first-generation Chevy Cruze. The Cruze is a truly formidable player in the compact-car game and in all honesty, the Cruze plays the game extremely well! However, the Cruze is in need of a re-do, a cosmetic tinkering, if you will and we now finally have a date from Chevrolet.

Chevy has announced the ’16 Cruze will be unveiled in Detroit on June 24th. The 2016 Cruze unveiling rounds out what Chevrolet has called its 2015 mantra, “Five in’15”. Other releases include the ’16 Volt, ’16 Malibu, ’16 Spark and obviously, the ’16 Camaro.  By releasing these five new models, Chevy is keeping its current lineup at nearly 85% new, reserving the truck remodels for a later refresh date.

The 2016 Cruze is coming stock piled with new features including a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with seven cogs being a segment first for a DCT system. The 2016 Cruze will also feature and have full support for Apple’s CarPlay system and the Android Auto, which you can read about here.

We will constantly be updating our blog and social media closer to the June 24th reveal of the 2016 Cruze, so keep your eyes peeled! If you would like more information about the 2016 Cruze, or would like to take any of our current Cruze inventory out for a test drive, stop by or give us a call! Fun Facts About Clio, MI

Fun Facts About Clio, MI

BAY CITY, MI- We’ve got some interesting trivia for you today! Here at Hank Graff Chevrolet Bay City, we always love to learn fun and obscure facts about our local Michigan towns. This week we decided to read up on the history of Clio, one of the many cool cities near our Chevrolet dealership. Check out these five fun facts about Clio, MI, and learn something new about this great Michigan town.

  • Clio, MI was named after the Greek Goddess Clio, muse of history and poetry, at the whim of a local hotelier and fan of classical literature, Colonel Hill.
  • Clio was originally known as “Varney,” after the town’s first grain buyer.
  • The first major structure in Clio, MI was a sawmill on North Mill Street, built in 1837. From there, the City of Clio started growing.
  • Clio (Varney at the time) expanded rapidly following the completion of the Flint and Pere Marquette Railway in 1861. The rail line still runs through Clio, but is now for freight trains rather than passenger trains.
  • Nowadays you can buy exotic fruits at your local supermarket anytime of year, but this wasn’t always the case. In the 1800s, Clio, MI was the place to come for exotic fruits like bananas, thanks to an entrepreneur named Robin Jones, who imported them.

Do you know any other

This year's weekend of festive fun begins Friday, December 12th, with the Christmas tree decorating taking place from 3-6pm. If your team can't make it out to decorate their tree at that time, don't sweat it! Give us a call, and we would be happy to find a time for you to come pick up your tree before December 4th. Then just return your decorated tree by 5:00pm on December 12th. Most importantly, though, don't forget to be creative and have fun!

The fun continues the next day, Saturday, December 13th, with a festive live auction from 10am-3pm. What better way to get in the holiday spirit? The live auction will display all the beautifully decorated trees (from the previous day), each one representing a different school or classroom. Throughout the event make sure to vote for your favorite trees with your $1 voting tickets, and every time you vote, you are automatically entered into the raffle! All the action wraps up at 3pm with the awards ceremony and raffle!

The best part about the whole event is that all of the money raised goes right back into our local schools and classrooms to support our children!
