Chevy's New App Uses a Personal Approach to Combat Distracted Driving

Chevy's New App Uses a Personal Approach to Combat Distracted Driving

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Chevrolet adds to personal touch to the initiative to curb distracted driving with their new app called "Call Me Out". The app uses the voices of a driver's loved ones to remind them of the potentially fatal consequences of taking their eyes off the road, and what they stand to lose by doing so.

A recent by Research Now reports that 84% of people agree that driving while handling a phone is dangerous, and yet 90% of drivers admit to doing it. Inspired to take a new approach to curb the issue, Chevy hosted a hackathon during which they challenged teams of young people to propose ways to combat distracted driving, and from that, the framework of Call Me Out was conceived.

The new app combines two very powerful forces: technology and those we love. Users can have their friends and family record a message through the app that will activate when the user tries to use their phone while driving; "calling them out" and making them think twice about the huge risk they're taking to answer a text or post on social media when on the road.

“As the father of two daughters, I am keenly aware of all the perils that my children face out in the world on a daily basis, and that is why it is so important for GM and Chevrolet to offer technologies that help all of us become safer drivers,” says Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “With Call Me Out we are extending our commitment beyond the technologies integrated into GM and Chevy vehicles and are making the app available for Android phone users who drive other vehicle makes and models in an effort to help people change their driving behavior and make our roads safer.”

HOW IT WORKS

  • Call Me Out uses the voices of the driver's loved ones to encourage them to put their phone down and concentrate on the road.
  • Currently, the app is only available to Android phone users who can download it for free in the Google Play store.
  • The app utilizes the vehicle's accelerometer and GPS to detect when the driver physically picks up their phone while traveling at speeds of more than 5 MPH, at which point it plays recorded, personalized messages from friends and family that remind them that notifications are not as important as the people who love them.
  • The app also adds a little competition to help encourage drivers to stay safe on the road, featuring a scoreboard and rankings, and keeping score of how much the user handles their phone. The less they do, the higher their score and rank on the leaderboard.

“Today’s vehicles offer a range of active safety features like Lane Keep Assist and Forward Automatic Braking that help drivers stay more aware of their surroundings,” says Tricia Morrow, Chevy safety engineer.
“But we also know the vehicle is only one element. Chevy’s Call Me Out app gives drivers another great tool to reinforce good driving behaviors — and as a mom of a teenage daughter, I personally know how important it is to model good driving behaviors and encourage others to do the same.”
Drivers must be 18 years or older and have a compatible device and data plan to use Call Me Out.

Service Lights and What They Mean

BAY CITY, Mich. –– We've all had it happen before: you're driving and suddenly a service symbol lights up on your car's dashboard. It can make anyone worried, from first-time drivers to people that have been driving for a very long time. To help you manage your stress and vehicle, we've created a list of the most serious service lights and what they mean. Using this handy guide can keep you and your car safe with any situation. We'll show you to handle each of these severe warnings to keep your vehicle in peak condition.

Service Lights and What They Mean

Check Engine Warning

Service Lights and What They Mean

There are many reasons why your Check Engine light can come on, but it's best to be proactive with this warning. It could be anything from a loose cap to wires that need replacing. When a Check Engine light comes on, it is best to take it to a mechanic as soon as possible, as their scanning tools can diagnose the issue much quicker to get your vehicle back on the road.

Coolant Temperature Warning

Service Lights and What They Mean

This light means that your vehicle is running at a higher than normal temperature. It's best to think ahead when you see a warning like this, as it can potentially damage your vehicle if left unchecked. It can be a coolant leak, a malfunctioning engine thermostat, or another issue, but your best bet is to get your vehicle towed to take care of the issue before it gets too serious.

Parking Brake Warning

Service Lights and What They Mean

If you have malfunctions in your braking system, this light will turn on to indicate that. However, there's also a chance that you could have left your parking brake on, so before you test your brakes, make sure your parking brake isn't on! If you release it and the light is still illuminated, you should call for assistance. You and the other vehicles on the road will be much safer because of it!

Traction Control Warning

Service Lights and What They Mean

When this light is illuminated, it means your vehicle's ability to brake or control traction is impaired, either due to the computer in your vehicle or through your car itself. Sometimes, the traction control's "off" button may have been accidentally pressed, and other times, it can be a more severe issue. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual to reset the issue, and if it persists, make sure you receive service!

Airbag Warning

Service Lights and What They Mean

This light comes on for a few seconds when you start up your vehicle. If it stays on, though, it means there could be an issue with your airbag or seatbelt. If you get into an accident and this light is on, it can prevent your airbags from operating. You can still drive your vehicle with no issue, but make sure you get this problem taken care of as quickly as possible.

Safety is a priority for us at Graff Bay City. We want to make sure that you know what to do if one of these lights happens to come on while you're driving. Keeping up to date on service lights and what they mean will help you keep yourself safe on and off the road. If one of these lights comes on, make sure to schedule an appointment at our Service Center as quickly as possible. We have an FAQ for any questions you may have with additional service lights or other maintenance issues. Our Service Staff is always available to help you with any concerns you have for your vehicle.

Chevrolet Upgrades Safety Features on the 2018 Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle

BAY CITY, Mich. –– Chevrolet and GM Fleet recently announced that they will be upgrading the 2018 Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) to better protect and serve officers of the law. To ensure the safety and well-being of police officers while they are out on the road, Chevy has improved the safety features of the new Tahoe to help reduce potential crash speeds and help avoid crashes altogether.

“We want to protect our protectors and help them get home safely at the end of every shift,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet. “The safety technologies we are introducing on the Tahoe PPV may serve as a second set of eyes.”

While the Tahoe PPV includes a suite of standard safety and driver assist features including StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System, Rear Vision Camera with Rear Park Assist, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, and steering wheel controls, it now has the new Enhanced Driver Assist Package available as well. This safety package is the first of its kind for a pursuit-rated vehicle, with five different technologies that make up the package, including:

Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking: This feature automatically helps to reduce the severity of a collision. If the vehicle is traveling at a low speed and the system detects that a front-end collision is imminent, it will apply the brakes if the driver has not already done so.

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning:
This system helps drivers avoid unintentionally drifting out of their lanes on the road with a gentle steering wheel turns. to when they are not actively steering and the turn signals are not activated.

Safety Alert Driver Seat: Instead of audible crash avoidance alerts, drivers can activate this GM-patented alert system to receive a haptic seat-bottom vibration pulses.

Forward Collision Alert: This technology employs radar and a forward-looking camera to measure the closing speeds between a vehicle and objects in its path. If the system determines that there is too small of a distance to the object in front of the vehicle, it will trigger a visual alert and audible beeps or seat pulses to alert the driver, if equipped.

Power Adjustable Pedals: To accommodate drivers of all sizes and help them find their optimal driving position for comfort and control, the Power Adjustable Pedals work in conjunction with the 2018 Tahoe PPV’s standard 10-way power driver seat and tilt wheel as well.

“When they’re on road patrol, police officers are constantly multitasking,” said Theodore Quisenberry, 43-year law enforcement veteran and the retired chief of the Royal Oak (Michigan) Police Department and the Oakland County Homeland Security Division. “Now when officers are scanning their surroundings, so is their vehicle. That will help them stay safe.”

To do their part to support the men and women serving as officers of the law, Chevrolet has upgraded the safety features on the new 2018 Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle. The available Enhanced Driver Assist Package will help to keep police officers safe while they are in their patrol vehicles with such features as Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, the Safety Alert Driver Seat, and Power Adjustable Pedals. In fact, features like these are so important that according to a 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) report, there is a 27 percent reduction in the rate of rear-end crashes reported to police by vehicles with forward collision warning systems, and when combined with automatic braking, the incident rate is decreased by 50 percent. To keep yourself and your own vehicle safe out on your road this season, we recommend completing our Winter Car Care maintenance routine. Your vehicle and its internal components can be adversely affected by the freezing temperatures this time of year, and getting service done to get them into top working order is a great way to ensure your vehicle doesn't break down out in the cold.

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Vehicle

BAY CITY, Mich.,–– At Graff Bay City, safety is our top priority. The National Safety Council estimates that at least 40,000 fatalities and over 4.6 million people were injured as a result of car crashes in 2016, the highest in almost a decade. To better keep you and your passengers safe on the road, we've put together a list of safety features worth having in your next vehicle!

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Vehicle

Available on new Chevrolet models, Rear Cross Traffic Alert informs you of approaching drivers or hazards when you back out of a parking spot or driveway. This safety-minded feature works hand-in-hand with Rear Camera technology, a feature that is standard on every new General Motors vehicle, giving you a clear image of the area behind your vehicle on your dashboard display. Rear Cross Traffic Alert technology provides visual and audible notifications if any moving objects or hazards are nearby to prevent any accidents from occurring.

Lane Keep Assist

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Vehicle

Lane Keep Assist technology provides audio and visual alerts on your vehicle dashboard display when you unintentionally drift into another lane. Should you continue to drift, Lane Keep Assist will gently nudge your steering wheel to keep you in your lane. Using cameras placed on every side of the vehicle, this feature monitors the patterns of the road, alerting you if you don't use your turn signals or if you regularly drift into other lanes. Lane Keep Assist helps to improve the safety of you, your passengers, and other vehicles on multi-lane roads and highways.

Front and Rear Parking Assist

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Vehicle

Eliminate the stress of parking in a difficult spot with Front and Rear Parking Assist technology. Cameras positioned on the front and back of your vehicle provide guidelines and notifications to help you adjust your position to prevent any damage to your vehicle or surroundings. From new drivers to experts behind the wheel, this technology can ease the process of parallel parking and reduce the stress behind it as well. Front and Rear Parking Assist is standard on most GM models and is a great feature for drivers of any lifestyle!

Adaptive Cruise Control

Safety Features Worth Having in Your Next Vehicle

Improve your cruise control experience with Adaptive Cruise Control technology. This feature allows you to match the speed of drivers in front of you, eliminating the need to constantly brake and accelerate to accommodate to others' speeds. You can adjust the space, or "follow gap" between other vehicles to allow other drivers to merge into your lane, too. Adaptive Cruise Control technology is available on most modern GM vehicles.

Forward Safety Awareness

Forward Safety Awareness technology utilizes the same cameras that Lane Keep Assist technology uses to alert drivers of impending danger in front of the vehicle. Radar technology alerts you of slowing vehicles ahead, providing video and audio notifications through your display dashboard. If a collision is imminent, Forward Safety Awareness automatically applies your brakes to either reduce the damage of a collision or prevent it altogether.

The United States Automobile Association lists each of these features on their website as features that improve car safety for drivers, passengers, and other drivers. These safety features worth having in your next vehicle will make the road a much safer place for everyone. All of the features mentioned are either standard or available on most modern General Motors vehicles. Browse our model lineup to see what safety features are standard with each vehicle. Take a look at Chevy car and truck technology to view additional customization options that are available on your Chevrolet vehicle, too. If you have any questions or would like to take a vehicle out for a test drive, call us to set up an appointment and we'll be more than happy to help you find the perfect vehicle to suit your needs!

Chevrolet Keeps Families Safe with the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

BAY CITY, Mich.,––Schools out for Summer in the Bay area and the kids are out and about enjoying the warm, sunny weather. One of the biggest concerns for parents in Bay City is the safety of their children, even within your own yard. Did you know, out of the 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries from backover crashes 40% occur in residential areas? In fact, 24% of those incidents happen in driveways. That's a number we want to see decrease, and so does Chevrolet. Thanks to innovations and advancements in vehicle safety, Chevrolet is keeping families safe, especially with the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox.

Chevrolet Keeps Families Safe with the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

A standard feature you'll see in many new cars is the Rearview Camera; however, Chevy has taken it to the next level with the Surround Vision feature in the new Equinox crossover. Instead of relying on one set of eyes to see what's happening around the car before backing out, the 2018 Equinox provides a full 360-degree vision, which is shown on the infotainment display for easy viewing.

Chevrolet Keeps Families Safe with the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Surround Vision uses four cameras to complete the 360-degree view. The technology combines the powers of the Rear Vision Camera, a camera that lies in the front grille, and two cameras that sit under each side mirror. When the Equinox is put into reverse by the driver, the display will show both the bird's eye view of the car and the Rear Vision view. This means you'll be able to see what's surrounding your vehicle on each side and what's directly behind your vehicle, complete with alerts when you're getting close to an object.

The 2018 Equinox and Chevrolet is well equipped to keep families safe with features like:
  • Surround Vision
  • Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator
  • Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Seat Reminder
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
Ready to check the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox out in person? Our team at Graff Bay City is available to help you find the perfect one and show you how to use and adjust all the neat safety features, Chevrolet MyLinkTeen Driver Technology, and more. Our sales persons, service technicians, and management personnel have families within Bay City and the surrounding areas. We know how important it is to find a vehicle that fits everyones needs and offers safety you can truly count on. We're proud to offer new Chevrolet vehicles that do just that!

IIHS Names 3 Chevrolets to Recommended Used Vehicles for Teens

IIHS Names 3 Chevrolets to Recommended Used Vehicles for Teens
BAY CITY, Mich. – A recent survey of parents by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed that many teens drive older vehicles and more than half of the parent's young drivers drove a vehicle that was a 2006 model year or earlier. You're probably thinking what's the big deal about teenagers driving used cars? Well, many of those vehicles lack the important safety features and technologies that work to keep us, and especially new drivers, safe.

Worry not! For the first time ever, the IIHS released their Recommended Used Vehicles for Teen Drivers, and included three Chevrolets! Making the IIHS' Best Choices (under $20,000) list, the Chevy Malibu, Chevy Equinox, and Chevy Traverse all earned Good ratings in the IIHS moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests; at least four out of five stars in federal government crash tests; and offer standard stability control to help avoid rollover crashes. So if your young driver is hitting the road soon and a brand new vehicle isn't realistic, check out these three Chevrolets on IIHS' List of Recommended Used Vehicles for Teens.

However, while a safe vehicle can help to protect your child, another important factor to remember when they get behind the wheel is behavior. A $2-million GM Foundation grant funded a recent Safe Kids Worldwide report which revealed some shocking statistics. It was found that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death to teens between the ages of 13 and 19, and of those who died, half were not wearing their seat belts!

It can be a stressful time when you child becomes old enough to drive, but with safe vehicles and great training, we can keep our teens safe! If you need help finding a vehicle that will protect your young driver, we are here to help! Hank Graff Chevy is located at 3636 Wilder Road, Bay City, MI 48706 and we can help you find the perfect vehicle for your weekend getaway! For more information on Hank Graff Chevrolet, or for any questions call us at (989) 684-4411 or visit our website: www.GraffBayCity.com.

New 2015 Chevy Colorado Child Safety Seat Feature

New 2015 Chevy Colorado Child Safety Seat Feature
BAY CITY, Mich. – Redefining the midsize truck segment, the all-new Chevrolet Colorado will hit the road and rubble this Fall! But it's not just performance and capability that the Colorado is bringing to the midsize segment. It's taking safety to the next level with the 2015 Chevy Colorado's segment-first child safety seat feature that will better protect your little ones!

While the new truck is equipped with many safety-related firsts for its segment, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado's patent-pending child safety seat feature is like nothing you have seen before. It's no question that you want to make sure your children are safe when you buckle them into their booster seats, but since manufacturers recommend having at least 80% of that seat base on the seat cushion for optimum protection, that can be hard in extended-cab midsize trucks due to the small rear jump seat. But with Chevy's new safety solution, you won't have to worry one bit! The patent-pending feature allows the rear seat headrest to be removed and inserted into the base of the seat horizontally, making the seat cushion larger and providing additional support to the booster seat.

WATCH: 2015 Chevy Colorado Safety Seat Feature Demonstration

Chevrolet's new segment-first child safety seat feature coupled with the truck's Driver Alert Package which includes forward collision alert and lane departure warning, will provide you with peace of mind that your passengers are protected when you hit the road in the new Colorado.
