Girls Rock: 13 Influential Women in Music

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Whether it's originating an entire genre, carving a path for other women in fiercely masculine territories, or using their fame as a platform to drive change throughout the world; these girls truly rock. In honor of National Women's History Month, us music lovers here at Graff Bay City would like to share with you some of the most influential female artists in music history!

1. BEYONCE
Kicking off our playlist is the one and only Queen B. While she describes herself as a "modern-day feminist", she stresses that, by definition, the concept is not exclusive to women, nor does it equate to female superiority. Rather, it is the belief in equal rights for men and women, and this is the message that she resolves to express through both her music and activism.

2. JANIS JOPLIN
While her time here was tragically short, Janis Joplin's impact on the world of rock n' roll is indisputable; widely regarded as paving the way for numerous female rockers after her. A free yet troubled spirit with a natural gift for performance, Joplin's onstage presence was described as "electric" by her fans and fellow musicians alike. As Stevie Nicks put it: "Janis put herself out there completely, and her voice was not only strong and soulful, it was painfully and beautifully real. She sang in the great tradition of the rhythm & blues singers that were her heroes, but she brought her own dangerous, sexy rock & roll edge to every single song. She really gave you a piece of her heart."

3. ARETHA FRANKLIN
The late, great Aretha Franklin not only holds the distinction as the "Queen of Soul", but is also arguably the originator of the genre itself as well as the first female inductee to the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. One of her most beloved hits, "Respect", was actually written and released by Otis Redding originally; but its the difference in the message that made Franklin's version a long-time feminist anthem. In Redding's version, the narrator is a desperate man who will give the woman in his life anything she wants, regardless of how she treats him, just as long as he gets his due respect as the breadwinner. In Franklin's version, the narrator is a strong, confident woman who is well aware that she has everything her man wants, and she demands that he give her the equal respect she gives him.

4. PATSY CLINE
The short-lived yet immensely impactful career of Patsy Cline transformed the influence of women in the largely male-dominated world of country music. After a decade long balancing act of helping support her family and grinding on the local country music circuit in her native Virginia, Cline got her big break on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts on CBS with the hit "Walking After Midnight". Her professional life was a series of firsts for a woman in her genre including induction to the Country Music Hall of Fame, headlining her own show, and performing on Nashville's biggest and most coveted stage: the Grand Ole Opry. Throughout her career, Cline was well-known for her staunch empowerment of other females in country music, believing that there was "room enough for everybody", as well as her shrewd business acumen and no-nonsense attitude that enabled her to deal with the toughest power players in the Nashville scene.

5. MADONNA
Hailing from our very own Bay City, Madonna is widely credited as an early voice of feminism in music; with revolutionary imagery and lyrics that helped to revitalize the discussion of the concept within the United States. While her hit song, "Material Girl", is commonly taken literally as valuing wealth over love, it is actually written from the perspective of a powerful woman with her pick of anyone she wants - championing values of female self-reliance and determination that were largely unheard of in pop culture even in 1985 when the song was released.

6. MISSY ELLIOT
Hip-hop has historically been a boys club. That is until Missy Elliot exploded on the scene in 1997, and helped to pave the way for future female rappers in a genre notorious for its oftentimes misogynistic image and lyrical content. Throughout her career, Missy's extensive musical catalog has included themes of feminism, gender equality, and body positivity; in addition to defying the typical "hip hop girl" appearance in favor of a style more closely resembling that of her male contemporaries.

7. LADY GAGA
The incomparable Lady Gaga is difficult to fit in just one box, and that affinity for constant self-reinvention and theatrical mastery is what makes her an artistic and pop culture icon. Since catapulting into stardom in 2008, she is regarded across the globe as one of her generation's most exciting and talented entertainers and is also known for her tireless activism for various causes including LGBTQ+ rights, anti-bullying initiatives, and much more.

8. BILLIE HOLIDAY
If you ask any jazz singer today to list their top influences, there's more than a chance that Lady Day is among them. With her lilting voice and limited range of just over an octave, Billie Holiday brought a unique slow style and raw emotional honesty that added a soulful edge to genre staples. In addition, she also wrote many of the songs in her repertoire, including "God Bless the Child" and "Don't Explain", at a time when it was unusual for a woman to do so. Another first in her day as a female songwriter was her courage to make political statements through her music, most notably "Strange Fruit", a haunting tune that speaks to the racially-charged violence in the South at the time, arguably making Holiday an early voice of civil rights.

9. CHER
Recognized as one of the best-selling artists of all time and the only one in history to have a No. 1 single in every decade since the 1960s, Cher's distinction as music royalty is indisputable. However, she's never been one to rest on her laurels, having been an innovator since day one, even pioneering the use of auto-tune (later known as the "Cher effect") with her song "Believe". She's also made an immeasurable impact on the fashion world as well with her daring, flamboyant style, in addition to being an outspoken advocate of veterans rights, anti-poverty initiatives, vulnerable children, and improved quality of life for patients.

10. SELENA
Regarded as the "Queen of Tejano Music", Selena's contributions to music have immortalized her as not only one of the most prolific entertainers in history but also as a pioneer who arguably blazed the trail for Latinas in mainstream music. In addition to natural vocal talent characterized by perfect pitch and timing, Selena's radiant personality and interactive presence endeared her to every audience she stood before, and her keen eye for aesthetic lent itself to her on-stage costumes - all of which she designed herself.

11. JOAN JETT
The original "riot grrl" and founding member of the female revolution in punk rock, Joan Jett remains as fearless and defiant today as she was when performing with the Runaways at the tender age of 15. As a woman in such an aggressively masculine genre, Jett's come-up was one faced by both outright prejudice and brush-offs, but she quickly proved herself a force to be reckoned not only through fierce performing ability and musical talent, but also an uncompromising attitude that's made her a feminist icon in rock n' roll, and earned her the much due respect of the guys.

12. BJÖRK
Hailing from the tiny country of Iceland, the eccentric and multifaceted Björk might be a little too out there for some, but her impact on music and the art world at large is undeniable. If you have the time to run the gauntlet of her ten-record discography, you'll hear for yourself just what makes Björk so exciting, each one being as artistically adventurous and ever-evolving as she, yet always hitting the mark and never sounding out of their element.

13. SPICE GIRLS
Now 25 years after their meteoric rise to stardom, the Spice Girls are still breaking records, with their debut album still holding the distinction of being the most successful by a female group in music history. More than that, they played an important role in the lives of countless young girls throughout the 1990s, championing the notion of "girl power" and strong messages of gender equality in their lyrics.

Top 10 Love Songs for Valentine's Day

BAY CITY, Mich. -- From entire symphonies to carefully curated mixtapes, music has long been one of the most popular ways to express one's love for another. Why? That's as much of a mystery as love itself, but at the same time is just as undeniable.

This Valentine's Day, we've assembled our own playlist of our Top 10 Favorite Love Songs for you to enjoy with that special someone in your life!

1. "Easy Living" - Billie Holiday

When it comes to love songs, not many can hold a candle to Lady Day. This tune exudes that feeling of life being just a bit easier in presence of that special someone.

2. "Book of Love" - Peter Gabriel

Love is a multifaceted thing. It's both complicated and simple. No matter how many sides there are, however, it all seems worth it with the right person.

3. "First Day of My Life" - Bright Eyes

Love isn't always sunshine and rainbows, but an imperfect series of epiphanies. What truly matters is the effort made by those involved to grow together, both as a couple and as individuals, in the wake of the many mistakes that will be made. Bright Eyes captures this dynamic in this song.

4. "You're My Best Friend" - Queen

The strongest partnerships often begin in friendship. You've endured the best and worst of each other together, uncomplicated by romantic expectation, creating an unconditional bond that blossoms into true love. That's exactly the idea Queen's bassist, John Deacon, had in mind when he wrote this song for his best friend who is now his wife.

5. "Sweet Child O' Mine" - Guns N' Roses

Your person represents everything that is good in the world to you. No matter how ugly other aspects of life get, you can count on finding safety in them even in the rawest of moments. For them, you feel that same level of devotion.

6. "Thinking Out Loud" - Ed Sheeran

Those who have been together for a long time know that you don't fall in love with each other just once, but every single day. Everyone has their moments, sure, but all those little things they say or do are continuous reminders that you're right where you belong.

7. "Can't Help Falling In Love (With You)" - Elvis Presley

Most of us can attest to the overwhelming affirmation of love. When it comes to that special someone, it feels as natural as a river flowing to the sea.

8. "Crystal" - Stevie Nicks

Sometimes love takes a little longer to find us, especially when past experiences make us a little resistant to reaching out. When you least expect it, however, someone comes along and makes it all crystal clear, and the feeling is impossible to deny.

9. "Drops of Jupiter" - Train

One of the most incredible things about people is our capacity for change. When romance either doesn't work out or was never explored in the past, it can sometimes mean that those involved had to learn something before clicking - whether about each other or themselves. If it's meant to be, however, things have a funny way of working out - no matter how long it's been, or how far you are.

10. "Your Song" - Elton John

True love transcends anything material. Oftentimes, it's the little things that can truly endear someone to us, even something as simple as a song.

What are some of your favorite love songs? Share them with us!

Music Runs Deep: Our Top 5 Chevy-Related Songs

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Cars are no doubt a popular subject in music, but you'd be hard pressed to find another name that's been dropped more than Chevrolet. In fact, Bill Ludwig, CEO of Campbell-Ewald - the agency that handled the brand for 91 years - reported in 2006 that there were a whopping 545 songs written about Chevy. By 2011, there were over 700.

On top of that, the brand has historically incorporated the work of popular artists in their ad campaigns, dating back to the 1950s when Dinah Shore encouraged Americans to "See the USA in Your Chevrolet". Others include Bob Seger, whose "Like a Rock" headlined a hugely successful campaign for Chevy trucks in the 90s; as well as John Mellencamp, whose "Our Country" inspired an emotionally patriotic plug for the Silverado.

So without further ado, here are our Top 5 Favorite Chevy-Related Songs! Enjoy!

1. "Crocodile Rock" - Elton John

Let's head back to those heady days of rock n' roll, blue jeans, and old gold Chevys. Do you remember? This is a tune perfect for the airy summertime cruises we're so fond of here in the Mitten, and really captures the Americana spirit in which Chevy is firmly rooted. In fact, Elton John drew heavy inspiration from Bill Haley and the Comets, the group responsible for one of the most iconic songs associated with the era: "Rock Around the Clock".

2. "American Pie" - Don McLean

Perhaps the most famous Chevy-related song out there, Don McLean's epic ballad is the longest song to enter the Billboard Hot 100, and the longest to hold the number one spot. While the meaning behind the lyrics has long been debated, one of the most popular theories is the "loss of innocence" amongst the early rock n' roll generation, citing McLean's strong references to the tragically sudden loss of three era icons: Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens - widely considered "The Day the Music Died".

On a more positive note, you could also say that "American Pie" is something of a tender love letter to the glory days of classic America. A revolutionary time when McLean and his contemporaries shed the antiquated values of their elders in favor of a more free-spirited, bold, and authentic culture - sentiments that Chevy shares strongly.

3. "Chevrolet" - ZZ Top

It doesn't get more blatant than this offering from music's most famous beards. The song tells the story of an easy-riding road trip through the American Southwest - just a dude, his Chevy, and the open road. The "flat forty-one" that the narrator mentions is the 1941 Chevrolet Series AK pickup truck. Knowing that their trucks might soon be rolling into WWII, Chevy was pressed to design a stronger, more versatile pickup. The result was the Series AK, which marked a shift in appearance from the "car-like" models they previously produced to those that distinctively looked, handled, and held-up like the burly Chevy trucks we know and love today.

4. "I've Got a Rock 'N' Roll Heart" - Eric Clapton

While sharing your life with someone you really dig is exciting, it's important that through it all you remain true to who you are. Furthermore, your partner should accept it. That's why they fell for you anyway, right? Eric Clapton melodizes this sentiment of personal authenticity with smooth vocals and even smoother licks - putting it plainly that if you wanna be his lover, you gotta take him as he is. We feel you on that '57 Chevy though, Eric. *swoon*

5. "Go Lil' Camaro Go" - Ramones

Despite limited commercial success in their two-decade career, the Ramones are the veritable godfathers of punk rock - widely considered to be the first band to truly define the sound and heavily influencing countless acts after them both in the United States and the UK. This quick little number is just as fast as the legendary Camaro - and definitely just as fun.

10 Smile-Inducing Songs to Help You Beat the Winter Blues

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Winter is certainly here in Michigan...but do you find that you feel pretty down about it? Does it seem to happen every year around this time? You're not alone. Seasonal depression, otherwise known as the "winter blues", affects an estimated 10 million people across the country according to Psychology Today. While many theories exist as to what causes it, one of the most widely accepted has to do with it getting dark much sooner, which increases melatonin production in the body and makes us feel extra drained. Another blames the significant lack of sunlight during this time, which can lead to feelings of sadness.

Whatever the cause, it definitely sucks. Don't worry, however, as there are several things you can do to lift your spirits - and one of the most popular methods is setting some positive vibes with great music! To help you knock those winter blues right out of your zone, we at Graff Bay City have curated this playlist of some of the most upbeat songs we could find. Enjoy!

1. DOG DAYS ARE OVER - Florence & the Machine
That bright uke intro. Those pounding drums. Florence Welch's lighter-than-air vocals. This is the perfect recipe to perk up and get ready to face the day - and crush anything it throws in your way.

2. A-PUNK - Vampire Weekend
This spunky song is sure to put some pep in your step, courtesy of Ezra Koenig and the boys.

3. YOU'RE MY BEST FRIEND - Queen
This wonderful song written by bassist John Deacon for his wife is the very embodiment of good vibes.

4. ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL - Jet
Clap your hands and sing along as loud as you can! Winter can't stop you!

5. PENNY LANE - The Beatles
The Fab Four have quite the repertoire of feel-good tunes, but this picturesque ode to a street in their beloved hometown of Liverpool takes the cake. You can't help but smile.

6. AIN'T TOO PROUD TO BEG - The Temptations

The Motown sound is famously upbeat, able to make the gloomiest winter days feel like sweet summertime. This huge hit from one of it's most successful groups is no different. We guarantee you'll be belting that intro with newfound enthusiasm before long.

7. HIGH HOPES - Panic! At the Disco
Let Brendan Urie's fiery theatrics melt all that icy negativity around you.

8. D.A.N.C.E. - Justice
Even casual listeners will recognize all the references to Michael Jackson in this funky homage to the late King of Pop. It's also sure to get you up and out of the dumps, doing the dance.

9. ALL THE SMALL THINGS - blink-182
This good vibes here are contagious. Be prepared to be singing this the whole day, and feeling amazing about it.

10. FLOAT ON - Modest Mouse
Even if things end up a bit heavy, don't worry. You'll float on, alright?

We hope this playlist made you smile, and wish you nothing but positivity this winter. You've got this! What are some of your favorite songs to lift your mood? Tell us in the comments!

National Metal Day: 10 Most Influential Artists in Service to the Metal

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The first National Metal Day was declared on November 11th, 2011. The significance of the date is an homage to the metal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap and the famous scene in which fictional guitarist, Nigel Tufnel, proudly displays a set of amplifiers with volume knobs that "go to 11" instead of the usual 10, allowing the band to kick it one notch higher should the occasion call for it. Since then, the day has become a celebration of all things metal - from the mythic themes that lend to its signature sound and unique culture, to the artists that have made it more of a religion than a musical genre.

We love all kinds of music here at Graff Bay City, and metal deserves recognition for its contributions to the artform as much as any other genre. As National Metal Day draws near, we give you ten of the most influential artists in service to the metal! Rock on!

1. BLACK SABBATH

Kicking off our list is the band credited by many as the originators of metal - or at least one of the genre's earliest pioneers. With groundbreaking records such as Paranoid (1970), which Time Magazine called "the birthplace of heavy metal", Black Sabbath helped to shape the dark and massive sound that we know today. Ask virtually any metal musician young or old to list their top five influences, and you can bet Black Sabbath is always one of them.

2. JUDAS PRIEST

There's metal that's loud and aggressive. Then there's metal that's melodic and rhapsodic. For the latter, you can thank Judas Priest. With complex guitar passages, poetic lyrics, and frontman Rob Halford's killer vocal range, they would be extremely influential in shaping the sound of later melodic and progressive metal acts.

3. DIO

Ronnie James Dio may have left our world eight years ago, but his legacy and influence on the metal genre live on forever. When he formed his namesake band in 1982, Dio was already a veteran of the music business lending his larger than life vocals to acts such as Rainbow and even Black Sabbath. Between his commanding showmanship, powerful voice, and mythical lyrics - Dio was more than a man, but an icon. As Rolling Stone said of him following his death: "What always stood out was Dio's raging compassion for the lost rock & roll children in his audience. Dio never pretended to be one of the kids — he sang as an adult assuring us that we weren't alone in our suffering, and someday we might even be proud of conquering it."

Dio is also responsible for the hand signal known universally throughout the metal culture, known as the "devil horns". Despite its name, the signal is actually not evil at all - but rather protection against it. Dio learned it from his Italian grandmother, whose cultural superstition uses it to "blind" the Devil by poking him in the eyes with the index and little fingers, thus making oneself invisible to him.

4. WHITE ZOMBIE

Named after what is considered the very first zombie movie, White Zombie is responsible for pioneering the groove metal subgenre and paving the way for the nu metal movement of the 1990s which included acts such as Korn and Deftones. White Zombie also ushered in a new era of inclusion for women in metal, as bassist Sean Yseult was simply seen as just another member of the band, rather than singled out as a female in a largely male-dominated genre.

5. METALLICA

The first thrash metal band to record an album, Allmusic says of Metallica: "They expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions", and called the band "easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth".

6. OPETH

Sweden's heavy grip and influence on metal culture need no introduction, and Opeth masterfully represents this legacy. Since their inception in 1989, they have fused a unique blend of progressive, folk, blues, and jazz elements with death metal more than any other band before them - alongside frontman Mikael Akerfeldt's impressively dynamic range able to shift between haunting clean vocals and deep, guttural growls creating pieces that are mind-altering musical odysseys rather than just songs.

7. SLAYER

Speaking of death metal, Slayer is directly responsible for its existence. Known as one of the "big four" of thrash metal, they took it to the extreme by adding elements of hardcore through downtuned rhythms, chugging guitar licks, and inflammatory lyrics that earned them heaps of controversy throughout their almost 40-year career.

8. IRON MAIDEN

Despite mediocre radio and television time, Iron Maiden is considered to be one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide as of 2017. In addition to their heavy influence on melodic metal and early thrash metal, they're noted for their incredible live performances that include their zombified mascot, Eddie, that helped to define the high energy and bombastic nature of the genre.

9. ARCH ENEMY

Much like their fellow countrymen Opeth, Arch Enemy are pioneers of melodic metal, progressive, and death metal fusion. Although their influence lies principally in former frontwoman Angela Gossow, whose powerfully brutal and aggressive vocals along with her commanding stage presence helped to pave the way for female-fronted metal bands - despite the genre being for the most part dominated by men.

10. ANTHRAX

While much of metal is plagued by controversy, Anthrax is noted as being one of the few acts of the genre to receive critical praise, helping to redefine its image during the 1980s and effectively making it more accessible to a broader fanbase. As far as their influence on the music itself, they're credited with helping to develop speed metal and thrash metal by adding elements of hardcore punk due to their upbringing in the New York underground.

Who are your favorite metal bands? Have you seen any of these artists live? Comment and tell us about it!
