The California battery start-up company, Envia Systems,
says that has achieved a tremendous breakthrough that could cut the price of
electric vehicle batteries in half. Last year General Motors invested $7
million into Envia Systems. What makes the breakthrough announcement
particularly interesting is that Envia says that it has verified with a U.S.
Navy test center that the cells in their batteries have hit the highest energy
density in any lithium-ion battery ever, about 400 Watt-hours per kilogram.
That’s nearly 10 times as much energy weight as the 2012
Volt’s competitor, the Toyota Prius.

With the Envia battery, the Chevy Volt's sticker price could be comparable to a regular midsized sedan |
At 400 Watt-hours per kilogram, the price of a 300-mile
range battery could be reduced by half. Envia says the science behind these
batteries is ready for production and could be road ready in as little as three
years. There are still a few bumps in the road to work out for Envia, but this
breakthrough puts GM ahead of the curve.
