National Car Care Month: Why You Should Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected

National Car Care Month: Why You Should Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected

BAY CITY, Mich.,---We at Hank Graff Bay City would like to remind you why you should have your belts and hoses inspected for National Care Care Month. When it comes to keeping your vehicle running smoothly, your belts and hoses are crucial parts of your engine because they're the whole reason it's able to run! Normal use will cause them to wear down over time, but both are more susceptible to damage in extreme hot or cold weather. Hot weather can add heat on top of existing friction, which causes them to wear down a lot faster, while cold weather can make them stiff and prone to cracking.

By following scheduled maintenance and going in for regular inspections, you can be sure that your belts and hoses are working properly. While they don't often require replacements, inspections can catch minor issues before they become major problems. Here we have some tips below on the various kinds of belts and hoses that help your car run, as well as how to spot any signs of damage.

National Car Care Month: Why You Should Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected

BELTS

Your engine's belts control things like your AC compressor, water pump, alternator, engine valve intake and exhaust, and power steering. A broken belt can completely disable your vehicle, and the changing temperatures that come with springtime can make them more prone to wear. Damaged, cracked, or frayed belts can still run but can cause even bigger issues like your engine overheating. While they don't often require replacements, it is important to get your belts inspected regularly.

There are two kinds of belts your engine uses: the timing belt and the accessory or serpentine belt.

Timing Belt: Also known as the Cam belt, the timing belt synchronizes the rotation of the camshaft and crankshaft. This helps the engine's valves open and close at the right times during the cylinders' intake and exhaust strokes. You should have your timing belt replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles or whenever your owner's manual tells you to do so, and here are a few signs to look out for that may indicate a replacement is in order:
  • Your engine "jumps" gears
  • Your vehicle is completely disabled
  • There are plastic pieces from the camshaft gears in your oil pan
  • There is loss of oil pressure (due to the camshaft pieces being in your oil)
  • You hear a squeaking noise from your timing cover
  • You hear rattling noises coming from your engine
  • You have trouble starting your vehicle
Accessory or Serpentine Belt: Most vehicles usually have one or two drive/accessory belts. Also known as the "serpentine" belt, the accessory belt gets its name from the snake-like motion it uses around the pulleys of the engine. Its job is to transport power to components like your power steering pump, AC compressor, alternator, and many others.

Water, dirt, oil leaks, and excessive heat can cause your serpentine belt to wear down very quickly. You should have it inspected every 10,000-20,000 miles, and replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles or whenever your owner's manual tells you to do so. Here are a few signs that your accessory belt might need replacing:
  • An overheating engine
  • A disabled vehicle
  • A loss of power steering
  • A squealing or high-pitched noise while accelerating

National Car Care Month: Why You Should Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected

HOSES

In the same way your circulatory system moves blood and oxygen around your body, your engine's hoses move fluids vital to your car's performance throughout its entire system. A cracked or damaged hose can lead to the leaking of these vital fluids, like coolant or brake fluid, and reduce the efficiency of your vehicle. There are several kinds of hoses inside your car:

Radiator Hoses: This hose moves coolant through your engine to regulate its temperature. Without it, your engine can overheat which can in turn case major internal damage and lead to costly repairs. Here a few indicators of a radiator hose leak:
  • Drop in coolant level
  • Smoke coming from your engine
  • Rising engine temperature
  • A bright pool of liquid underneath your vehicle
Fuel Line: The fuel line transports fuel from your fuel tank to the fuel pump, and are typically made out of reinforced rubber but can also be made out of plastic or metal. While they aren't usually a part of your vehicle's routine maintenance, it is extremely important to have them checked before the end of the fall or beginning of spring when temperatures are changing drastically. Here are some signs you may need to replace your fuel line:
  • Loss in fuel efficiency/gas tank emptying faster than normal
  • Puddles of gas underneath your vehicle
  • Smelling gasoline while driving
  • Hard starts
  • Your vehicle not starting at all
Brake Lines/Hoses: Brake lines and hoses are used to stop your vehicle when you depress the brake pedal. Some vehicles made of steel and some made of rubber, but rubber takes the majority for the flexibility it provides to your car's suspension when traveling on uneven surfaces. Here's how to tell if you have a broken brake line or hose:
  • Loss of braking ability
  • "Soft" brakes
Now that you know why you should have your belts and hoses inspected for National Car Care Month, schedule an appointment with our friendly and knowledgable service team today, and we'll help you keep your vehicle running at its best this spring and get it ready for your summer adventures!

10 Ways To Give Thanks

BAY CITY, Mich. – Everyone knows that Thanksgiving is the time of year to be with family and reflect on all of the blessings in your life. Being thankful for what you have is a very important lesson to teach to your children. Try some of these 10 ways to give thanks to be more introspective and appreciative this Thanksgiving season.

10 Ways To Give Thanks

Write Thank You Letters

Go to the store and buy some thank you letters. Write a heartfelt message to all those in your life who you are thankful for and deliver the letters before Thanksgiving!

Donate

Whether its food, clothing, or money, donating to help those in need is a great way to give back and appreciate the things you have.

Volunteer

Volunteering your time is something that anyone can do. Whether it be at an animal shelter, a local homeless shelter, or a soup kitchen, it's always important to give back. All of these places can especially use your help during the holiday season.

Give Out Gifts

Bake some treats, get some dollar store toys, or make little goody-bags to give out to friends, teachers, and other people in your life.

Create a Thankful Tree

Grab a fallen tree branch out of your backyard to start making a Thankful Tree! This simple craft is a great way to have a conversation with your children about being thankful for the things they have like family, pets, their favorite toys, and more.

Talk About Being Thankful at Dinner

Before you sit down together, at Thanksgiving or any other night this November, take a moment, go around the table and have each family member say what they are thankful for.

Be Extra Grateful Out in Public

Spread gratitude and kindness out in public to make the world a nicer place this November. Say thank you, smile, be vocally appreciative to your neighbors, store clerks, and others.

Send a Care Package to Military Members

Show your thanks and appreciation for our military service members by sending them a care package for the holidays with treats, letters, and other comforts from home. We recommend going through Operation Gratitude.

Donate a Thanksgiving Dinner

You can donate to local food banks and sponsor a family in need with a Thanksgiving dinner this year. It will mean a great deal to the family you sponsor to have a warm meal on Thanksgiving.

Invite Those in Need to Thanksgiving

Can you think of anyone you know who might benefit from a warm and friendly meal? Maybe someone you know who doesn't have a family Thanksgiving of their own to go to or family friends who have fallen on hard times? Reach out to them and make a difference this holiday season.

Spend the Thanksgiving season reflecting on all that you have and being appreciative this year with any of these 10 ways to give thanks. To show our appreciation for all our customers, we've got special service coupons that you can download and use to save big on your next trip to our Graff Bay City Service Center. This time of year, when the weather is growing colder, we recommend completing our Fall Car Care maintenance routine to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter.

Earth Day Tips To Help Save The Planet

Earth Day Tips To Help Save The Planet

BAY CITY, Mich., – On April 22nd, Earth Day, we'll be celebrating our amazing planet! Now more than ever, we're aware of our impact on the environment. The good news is that Chevy vehicles are reducing emissions and are becoming more fuel efficient! Today serves as a great reminder for us to do our part to preserve planet earth. Converting to a more fuel efficient Chevrolet vehicle is a great first step, be here are a few more Earth Day Tips To Help Save The Planet in your everyday life!

Earth Day Tips To Help Save The Planet:
1. Unplug electronic appliances. Even when they aren't turned on, electronic appliances that are plugged into a power source still draw energy, which means you're wasting energy.

2. Shop the local farmer's market. Not only is the carbon impact of items from your farmer's market lower due to reduced transportation, but the food is almost always organic meaning no chemical pesticides have been used.

3. Buy and use a lunch box. Think about how waste-free you can make your lunch by using reusable containers, a reusable water bottle, and reusable utensils.

4. Install a new shower head. If you take a 10 minute shower every morning, you're likely using over 9,000 gallons of water per year. By switching to an EPA approved shower head you could save over 3,000 gallons of water per year!

5. Fill up the dishwasher. If you have a modern dishwasher, you don't need to rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. In addition, wait until the dishwasher is full before turning it on.

6. Use the shades. Save money and energy by lowering your window shades. In the summer, they will keep the sun and heat out and in the winter they will keep cold drafts at a minimum.

7. Switch to natural household products. Regular household cleaning products can be incredibly toxic and have actually been cited as the second largest air pollutants in major U.S. cities!

8. Start a compost. You can greatly reduce the amount of household trash by composting.

9. Dispose of old electronics the right way. When electronics are dumped in landfills and exposed to high heat, they release toxic chemicals into the air, water, and ground. So either sell them online, or take them to the proper location in your city to get rid of them.

10. Walk instead of drive. If you're going a short distance, get some exercise and fresh air. With the weather being so nice out, you don't need to drive everywhere.

11. Pay your bills online. Not only will this save on paper, but it's also more convenient for you!

12. Stop using plastic or paper bags at the grocery store. Many grocery chains and stores offer reusable bags for a small price and unlimited use. Think about how much plastic you'll save in a month!

If you're looking to reduce your carbon impact by switching to a more fuel efficient vehicle like the 2017 Chevrolet Volt. If you're satisfied with the vehicle you're already driving, take a look at our Spring Car Care pages. By performing routine maintenance on your vehicle, you'll get the best fuel-efficiency possible. Schedule your spring service appointment at Graff Bay City today.

  1. Check your tire pressure monthly. On the inside of your driver door you’ll find the recommended PSI for your tires. Under-inflated tires will burn through more fuel, so keeping them properly inflated will give you more miles per gallon.
  2. Use cruise control as much as possible. When you’re driving on the freeway for a long period of time, turn on your cruise control and save you fuel. Cruise control will give you more miles to the gallon.
  3. Run all your errands in one trip. By making one big trip instead of a several smaller ones you’ll be saving your gas overtime. It may not seem like it, but starting up your car and running back and forth each time will use up more fuel in the long run.
  4. Consider your driving style. The way you drive will have a huge impact on how much gas you go through. For example, if you slam on your brakes or accelerate quickly you’re going to burn through more gas than someone who accelerates and brakes gradually.
  5. Get rid of unnecessary items. If you’re the type of person who carries everything in their car, you may want to reconsider. The heavier your car is, the less miles you’re getting per gallon. We recommend getting rid of the unnecessary items you have sitting in your trunk and back seat to improve your fuel efficiency.
  6. Give your engine some love. Routine oil changes and other maintenance will go a long way. By giving your engine the routine maintenance it needs, you vehicle will not only last longer, but it will also get the best MPG possible.
