How to Change A Flat Tire After You Hit A Pothole

BAY CITY, Mich. – According to a study conducted by NBC News, almost 60% of Americans don't know how to change their vehicle's tires. Instead, many rely on roadside assistance for a quick and easy solution in the event of a flat tire. The likelihood of which is pretty great this time of year in Michigan, as our roads are covered in dangerous potholes that can damage your tire if you drive over one. Knowing how to change a flat tire is a necessary skill that all drivers should be able to do. While it is easy to rely on roadside assistance for help, there's always a chance that you may get a flat tire in an area with no cell phone reception, leaving you on your own. Luckily, changing your vehicle's tire is a quick and easy process to learn. Follow these guidelines if you wind up with a flat tire while you're out on the road.

What You'll Need to Fix a Flat Tire

Spare Tire
Lug Wrench
Jack
Vehicle Owner's Manual

In order to change a tire, you'll need all of these items to safely and effectively replace your flat. All of the items listed should come with your vehicle and, besides your vehicle owner's manual, are typically located in your trunk. If you can't find these items, or if your car didn't come with any of the items listed above, you should purchase new ones right away.

How to Change a Flat Tire

Find a Safe Place to Park: If you notice you have a flat tire, slowly reduce your speed and look for a safe and level place to park. Turn on your hazard lights, pull over into the safe area away from traffic, and apply your parking brake.
Remove Your Hubcap: If your vehicle has hubcaps that cover the lug nuts on the wheel, you'll want to get it removed before you can get to work on your tire. Use the flat end of your lug wrench (the "L"-shaped tool in your tire changing kit) to pry your hubcap off. If you aren't sure how to remove your hubcap, consult your vehicle owner's manual.
Loosen the Lug Nuts: Using the other end of the lug wrench, unscrew the lug nuts on your vehicle's tire (there should be six of them) until they're loose. Do not completely remove the lug nuts just yet though. Also, if you're having trouble loosening the lug nuts, use your foot or the weight of your body against the lug wrench if you need to.
Position Your Jack Under Your Vehicle: Look under your car for a clear area of exposed metal or a groove in your vehicle's frame near the flat tire where you can place your jack. If you aren't sure where to look, consult your vehicle owner's manual to find the specific location to place your tire jack.
Raise Your Vehicle With the Jack: Carefully crank the lever on your vehicle's jack to raise your vehicle until it's at least six inches above the ground. While your vehicle is raised, it is extremely important to make sure you don't put any part of your body underneath it.
Unscrew the Lug Nuts: Now that your vehicle is raised, it's time to finish unscrewing your lug nuts. You should be able to do it by hand after loosening them up in step 3. Once removed, keep the lug nuts in a nearby location so you can have them on hand when you put the new tire on.
Remove Your Flat Tire: Grab your tire by the treads and carefully remove it until it's free from your vehicle. Make sure to lay it flat so it doesn't roll away.
Mount Your Spare Tire: Now, take your spare tire and line up the lug nut holes in the rim so that they align with the lug bolts (the metal bolts where you removed the lug nuts). Gently push your spare tire in until the lug bolts are visible through the rim of your tire.
Tighten the Lug Nuts: Put your lug nuts back on the lug bolts and tighten them by hand. Tighten them as much as you can.
Lower Your Vehicle: Slowly and carefully lower your vehicle on the jack so that it's on a level plane again. After this, you'll want to tighten the lug nuts one more time with your lug wrench for good measure.
Replace Your Hubcap: Your hubcap should fit in perfectly back on your spare but if it doesn't, keep it with your flat tire after you put everything away.
Put Away Your Equipment: Put your flat tire, lug wrench, and jack in your vehicle's trunk. Double check that you have everything and pat yourself on the back! You've changed your flat tire!

Your vehicle's spare tire isn't built to handle high speeds or long drives, so make sure you drive carefully to the nearest auto service technician. Know When to Get an Oil Change

BAY CITY, Mich. –– Your vehicle is very similar to the human body in that it requires a lot of working parts in order to run. Thinking of it in this way will help you to properly care for its individual components. If your vehicle's engine is its "heart", its motor oil serves as the "blood", allowing components to work efficiently and smoothly. However, your vehicle's specific components will require replacement over time. If you know when to get your oil changed, you can keep your vehicle's "heart" running for years to come. When should I get my oil changed?

Oil change intervals can differ between vehicles. Older vehicles may require an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles, while newer vehicles may need it every 5,000-8,000 miles. Depending on the type of oil your vehicle takes, these numbers can differ. If you aren't sure when your oil needs to be changed or the type of oil your vehicle uses, consult your owner's manual. You can use it as a service log to keep track of routine maintenance so you'll know when you need to schedule future oil changes!

How do I check my oil?

Before you bring your vehicle in for an oil change, you can check it at home with a few easy steps! Checking your oil is an important skill all vehicle owners should know. It will help you determine when you should schedule service and can help if you forgot when you last received an oil change. Follow these steps to check your oil at home:

After turning off your vehicle and allowing your engine to cool down, pop your vehicle's hood.
Look for your engine's dipstick. It should be a yellow lever similar to the one in the image above.
Pull the dipstick out of your engine and wipe it on a cloth, removing any excess oil.
Reinsert the dipstick into your engine, removing it again.
Your dipstick will have "full" and "empty" labels on it. If your oil level is below the "empty" label, it's time for an oil change!

What are the signs that I need my oil changed?

Consequently, there are also several signs that your vehicle can give you if you need an oil change. If you notice any of these indicators, bring your vehicle in for an oil change right away! Pay attention to these signs while you drive to find out whether or not you need an oil change:

Your Engine Oil Looks Dark: When you first get your oil changed, it will be a honey brown color. After a while, it will darken, but if you check your oil and it looks black and grimy, it's time to schedule an appointment for service.
Your Engine Is Running Louder Than Usual: If you have low oil levels, your engine can begin to make unusual noises and can run louder than normal. If you notice this or your engine's heat starts to increase, get your oil changed right away!
Your Check Engine Light Stays On: Newer vehicles usually provide notification to their drivers if their vehicle needs an oil replacement. However, older vehicles notify their drivers through the Check Engine light. Schedule an appointment right away when your Check Engine light illuminates!
You Find Particles In Your Oil: The next time you check your oil, wear latex gloves and rub the oil between your finger and thumb. If you feel any metal flakes, grit, or other particles, something could be severely wrong with your engine. Bring it in as soon as possible!

Kids Can Trick-or-Treat Safely at the 8th Annual SVSU Trunk-or-Treat Around The Track

BAY CITY, Mich.––We're all for having a great time and celebrating one of the most fun holidays throughout the year, Halloween! While it is a scary-fun holiday, there can be some set backs to having a good time like terrible weather (because it's October in Michigan), sending your kids out into an unfamiliar neighborhood, and those gosh darn belly aches from all that delicious sugar-laden candy. We've got a solution. Kids can trick-or-treat safely at the 8th Annual SVSU Trunk-Or-Treat Around The Track.

The entire event is indoors, which means it's completely weather proof. So, you won't have to worry about fitting your child's costume over a snow suit! There's even space for waiting to enter the arena inside the Ryder Center corridors. The arena will include 25 trunk stations, which is about a small neighborhood's worth of trick-or-treating opportunities.

Did we mention, this trunk-or-treat event is entirely free?!
All this fun will be happening on Friday October 28th, from 5pm-7pm at Saginaw Valley State University at the Ryder Center Arena.

This event will also solve the candy overload problem. At the 8th Annual SVSU Trunk-Or-Treat event, stations will be handing out healthy foods donated by Meijer. Plus, the SVSU varsity sport teams will be hosting sport-specific activities to get all that spooky energy out! Kids always come home tired and with a belly full of healthy treats, which is always a bonus for a great night's sleep.
