BAY CITY, Mich.- Today, Bay City Powertrain and Saginaw Metal Casting Operations, in addition to other facilities throughout the region, received big news from GM. The two Mid-Michigan locations will receive major funding for upgrades! Specifically, General Motors will invest $72 million in the Bay City factory!
Located in the same town as your Hank Graff Dealership, Bay City Powertrain will receive a $31.7 million investment from GM for production updates. The investment will be split; $19.2 million will go towards producing components for a new V6 engine and $12.5 million will go towards the production of components for the small Ecotec gasoline engine.
The Ecotec gasoline engine is new to GM's global engine family, and will perform better, offer improved fuel economy, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Based on production throughout the state and other parts of the world, the new Ecotec gasoline engine could reach 2 million engines made annually by the end of the decade.
The large investment by General Motors is due in part to the 50 year, 100 percent personal property tax abatement that was awarded to GM back in 2007 which assures that all future machinery and equipment investments are tax exempt. GM has pointed out that a major reason why they are here and are able to continually expand Bay City Powertrain is because of the tax abatement. Since 2009 General Motors has invested roughly $131 million in the Bay City factory which produces camshafts and connecting rods for the Chevy Volt, Chevy Cruze, Chevy Sonic, among other vehicles.
