BAY CITY, Mich.- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently put the tiniest cars on the road to the test and discovered that in the challenging new small-overlap crash test, many of them can actually put passengers at risk! Luckily, the 2014 Chevy Spark was the only Acceptable Minicar in the Small Overlap Test, earning an IIHS 2014 Top Safety Pick Rating!
Actually, it's not luck at all. Chevrolet's global safety team has invested intense efforts to deliver big safety in a small package with the 2014 Chevrolet Spark. The 2014 Chevy Spark was the only minicar to earn an "acceptable" rating in the new small overlap test. Coupled with earning the highest possible "good" scores in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, the Spark was also the only vehicle in the minicar segment to earn a Top Safety Pick Rating! Further, the small overlap crash test results actually resulted in many of the other cars in the segment losing their top safety pick status from last year.
In the new small-overlap crash test, which was incorporated in 2012, the IIHS recreates what happens when the front corner of the vehicle strikes another vehicle or object, like a tree or utility pole. In the test, the front quarter of the driver's side of the vehicle strikes a barrier at 40 mph. Since this test bypasses the front-end crush zone, it has proved to be an especially difficult test, especially for small cars, since they are already at a safety disadvantage due to their size.
The great news is that the 2014 Chevy Spark, though small in size, still delivers top notch safety so you can downsize your vehicle without a worry!
