BAY CITY, Mich.
– In the ongoing battle against distracted driving, General Motors has secret weapon against texting and driving:
CarPlay. Consumers all over the country have continually taken their eyes of
the road to text, stream music or to look at their GPS, and have caused both
minor and major accident while doing do. T0 curb this, GM believes they have
found a cure, and that cure is increased mobile phone integration with its
vehicles with help from two major players from the infamous Silicon Valley:
Google and Apple.
Fourteen selected 2016 Chevrolet vehicles, including the
2016 Cruze, 2016 Camaro, 2016 Volt and 2016 Malibu, will enjoy this new
technology function. Both Apple and Android systems will be compatible, however
the Android model is still in testing and might not be available for sometime
after Apple’s software. Both systems offer different apps, based on their own
specific operating systems and user preferences.
The Android Auto system is built around Google Maps, Google
Now and the ability to talk to Google as well as a growing audio and messaging
app ecosystem that includes WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music, Spotify and
even podcast players. Apple CarPlay however takes select iPhone features and
puts them on the MyLink display that’s much simpler to read and access. This
allows the driver to send texts, make calls and listen to music right from the
touchscreen or by voice via Siri.
